The Origin of Fiesta Musical in Kansas City
Tomas Pacheco's interest in radio led him to 90.1 FM KKFI, Kansas City's Community Radio. For years he helped the radio station as a volunteer. Tomas handed out flyers; manned the KKFI booth at various events; operated the board on various shows; and maintained the music library. As Tomas' radio experience grew with training and certification, he eventually submitted a proposal to create his own radio show. Tomas' original vision was to appeal to a younger audience by mixing in Latin and hip hop music, which they like to hear, along with Tejano to expose the genre to a younger audience. The proposal was revised to appeal to a broader audience primarily using Tejano music as a format. Fiesta Musical was approved in July 2003 and, thus, a new Tejano show in Kansas City was born. Tomas along with Dan "the Man" Ramirez and IV Garza were part of the original proposal. All three djs would provide music and information to the Fiesta Musical show.
Fiesta Musical's Goals and Vision
Tomas had a vision to do more than the average Tejano show. He wanted to do more than just play music. Anyone can push "play" on a cd player. But Tomas wanted to elevate the quality of Tejano programming in Kansas City and go beyond the status quo by informing and entertaining the audience. Sometimes the show has made listeners laugh and other times stirred emotions which has made the show controversial at times. One time, during Veteran's Day week, the show featured Tejano patriotic tunes. Between songs, Tomas interjected his comments on air about supporting families of military personnel and at the same time criticizing the politics of the war. This caused a buzz with our listeners and an irate veteran called the show voicing his displeasure of the comments.
"Taking Tejano to the Future" is a slogan that means more than just lip service to Fiesta Musical. As a former rap artist, Tomas knows how young, up and coming struggle to get exposure and airplay for their music. Tomas wants to support new and young Tejano artists and he offers them airplay on Fiesta Musical. Fiesta Musical aggressively seeks out new artists to play on air by scouring internet; attending major Tejano events that feature new artists i.e. TTMA Fan Fair; and hosts a website and My Space page where new artists can learn how to submit their music to Fiesta Musical. Fiesta Musical's new artist music library is extensive and rivaled by few across the nation.
Artist interviews are a staple for Fiesta Musical which places the show head and shoulders above local shows and on the same playing field with several Tejano shows across the nation. Fiesta Musical works hard at maintaining a good rapport and relationship with Tejano artists. This helps us to coordinate artist interviews with their new cd releases. And sometimes, if we are lucky, we'll get an advanced copy of new music before any other radio show and debut the new music first on Fiesta Musical.
Fiesta Musical strives to maintain a professional edge. The djs pour countless hours of preplanning and research into each show to ensure a high level of quality programming. This combined with informing and entertaining listeners and providing new artists access to radio airplay, Fiesta Musical is the standard for quality Tejano programming in Kansas City.
