Toxicology tests released this week show that Tejano music star Emilio Navaira was intoxicated when the
tour bus he was driving crashed in March, authorities said.
Navaira was thrown through the windshield of his tour bus at 5 a.m. on
Easter Sunday, when the bus slammed into traffic barrels on the
northbound West Loop 610, just before the exit onto U.S. 59 in
southwest Houston.
Six of his band members were also injured, none seriously.
Navaira was driving the tour bus after performing Saturday night at
Hallabaloos nightclub in South Houston. Police said at the time that he
did not have the proper driver's license to operate the bus.
He had been arrested for driving while intoxicated in September of 2000.
Doctors initially did not know if Navaira would survive the severe head
trauma he suffered during the crash, but late last month said he had
made remarkable progress.
Neurotrauma doctors at Memorial
Hermann-Texas Medical Center announced on April 18 that Navaira had
recently been able to write his name and stand up, and was regularly
talking and eating on his own. On April 23, he was moved to a
rehabilitation facility at Texas Medical Center.
In 2003, Navaira won a Grammy for his CD Acuerdate. His latest CD, De Nuevo, was released last September.
