SEGUIN —The First Baptist Church and Impact Seguin is inviting the town out for a day of fun for the whole family.

For the second year, the congregation is hosting Tejano Family Festival 2009 on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Central Park along side the Pontiac Classic Car Show.

Lupe Gonzales, event coordinator said the musical event got started last year because after many years of playing at festivals — while a part of a music group — and he rarely saw one that was family friendly.

“What we are all about is to have a festival that is non-alcoholic — there will not be alcohol sold or allowed — and a place where people can come enjoy Tejano music and where they don’t have to worry about high security because it is a family oriented type of thing,” he said. “It is rare to find such events that are family oriented.”

The evening will be a plethora of musical stylings and talent that will entertain everyone, Gonzales said.

“This music is not only Spanish type of music, it varies from contemporary Christian to rock to black gospel sound to country gospel sound,” he said.

Bringing the sounds to life at this year’s musical event are two bands from the area and one from the Gulf coast, Gonzales said.

“This year I am bring conjunto music from Corpus, the group’s name is Little Larry and Fortaleza,” he said. “Then there is my band, Los Soul Brothers, and a group from New Braunfels, Groupo Ocho. I brought them back because they are from New Braunfels and I liked their style. We try to cater to everybody. My group plays all styles of music, we cater to everybody — rock, Tejano, cumbia style.”

Along with good music, local churches will be on hand selling good eats, Gonzales said.

“There will be vendors from different churches selling tacos, fajitas, gorditas and stuff,” he said. “That is all going to be happening while our festival is going on.”

For the younger generation, Gonzales said there will be face-painting and balloons to go along with free popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones.

This year, the celebration will be combined with the Pontiac Classic Car Show, Gonzales said.

“It will work out great with the combination of people who are coming in to check out the classic cars and they can stick around for the music,” he said.
