Tejano Music Awards Winners 2009

Tejano Music Awards Winners 2009

Some of the awards were already a given, not unlike years past. For Example everybody knew Jay Perez was gonna win Male Vocalist, everybody knew Jimmy Gonzalez y Mazz, Elida Reyna, and Ruben Ramos were gonna win their respective categories. I think the biggest thing was the winners of the “New Artist” awards, Eddie Guerrero, Monica Castro, and Grupo Sueno. I would like to personally congratulate all of the new artists and welcome them in to this crazy world we call Tejano.

I challenge the radio stations and the different awards shows to play more of the new groups, and to award more of the new groups. There are a lot of new bands, artists, and groups that deserve the lime light, yet they get passed over year after year. Which causes us to question if there is anything new? Yes we know that Jay Perez will have a new CD and that Elida or Jimmy will have a new CD, but is there anything else?

For example I know of at least 30 plus new groups or relatively new groups that don’t get any love in the industry. What is the malfunction preventing us to move beyond “Tejano 99″? We wonder why our kids don’t feel the music and why we don’t pull as many people to our dances and events, yet we don’t look for solutions we only make excuses.

OH! the economy is bad, or Tejanos won’t pay more than $5.00 at the door, or it’s just the kids these days. However, we don’t turn around and realize that we have hit the pause button on the industry and didn’t allow it to expand and grow.

I mean what happened to:

Veronica y Avance
Evolucion
Stephanie Abriana
La Preferencia
Megan Leyva
La Traizion
La Distancia
Atrevido
Veronica Meza

Are we really going to allow these musicians to age and grow bitter with the industry? How long can you put your blood sweat and tears in to an industry that doesn’t give you any love? Take in mind that the list above is not the only groups that are hurting or that have potential to be the next big thing. It’s just an example, yes some of the people listed were up for awards. However, they were up for new artist awards and that is a question in itself. Some of the groups or artists listed above have been in the industry now for quite a few years. So I guess the question itself is this… Are we going to make a change and wake up the “Sleeping Giant” or are we going to continue down the rough road we have been on?

I for one will begin to open my doors to any and all new artists. If you want to be featured or interviewed on iTejano then just click on our contact us button and let us know. WE WANT YOU! We want to help push the music forward, and to turn off the pause button. Your time is here and now, lets do this!

And if you have a website or station or personal preference is to help the new artists and groups, then I commend you.  Not all are letting this happen, but some are and that is what I believe we need to do to move forward.

I love Tejano music! I’m from originally from Corpus, moved to San Antone for a couple of years and now permanently in Dallas. Dallas doesn’t have ANYTHING good on the radio as far as Tejano!!! Ugh!!! Makes me sick to hear the Banda, Duranguense, Norteno, etc. Yeah yeah I know this is part of my culture and all but all of my love goes out to the Tejano genre. Help!!!

I hear some people on the fence of old and new tejano music. Itwas geniously dubbed”tejano99″. these new bands and sounds are what i like to refer as “growing pains” in the tejano community. tejano music has not been around that long if you sit down and compare it to other genres. There was a time when the chicano sound wasnt widely accepted by musicians and music goers. Tejano at one time was infact refered to as a new sound itself. These new bands that are viewed as leaving or changing tejano music, are infact making la onda grow and spread. the availibility and advanceing of technology has changed the industry more than weve expected. albums can be sold and released without any cd being printed(mp3,wma},promotion is easily accessible(myspace,cl}instruments are actually more affordable than ever, making more musicians and inturn more competition. the list goes on. Im exited to see what happens in the near future

I agree we need to help the local groups. If “Country and Rap,” music help eachother get the top, why can’t we do the same?

There are several bands out there, your right. Be proud of your music and play with the heart, and I know you will be heard.

I AM GLAD AND FORTUNATE TO SEE THAT ALOT OF NEW FACES ARE GETTING THE RECOGNITION IN THE TEJANO MUSIC INDUSTRY…..BUT ONE QUESTION….? HOW LONG BEFORE WE GET THE RECOGNITION THAT TEJANO DESERVES ? I AM A TEJANO DJ WHO HAS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY OLD AND NEW….. THERE IS ALOT OF TEJANO TALENT OUT HERE THAT HAS NOT BEEN GIVING THE FAIR OPPORTUNITY….. IT IS MY OPINION THAT ALOT HAS TO DO WITH MONEY….. OUR MAINSTREAM ARTIST STARTED WITH NOTHING …..AND THEY MADE IT WITH THE SUPPORT OF SPONSORS AND JOBS THEY WITH HELD AT THE TIME….THEN WE HAD CORPORATE AMERICA WHO FORKED OUT THE CASH TO THE ARTIST AND RECORD LABELS….. I AM NOT PUTTING ANYONE DOWN … BUT IT’S TIME TO MAKE NOISE AGAIN. I RESIDE IN DALLAS AND I AM A WELL KNOWN DISC JOCKEY… SOME COMPARE ME TO JOHNNY RAMIREZ OR MEAN MAURI . IM FLATTERED BUT I AM NOTHING LIKE THEM. WE ARE UNIQUE IN OUR OWN WAYS. BUT WE DEFEND WHEN IT COMES TO TEJANO AND MORE.I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION A FEW NAMES THAT SHOULD BE OUT THERE AS WELL……FIRST OF ALL TO OUR INTERNET RADIO STATIONS… FOR DOING ONE HELL OF A JOB …..TEXMEXFM.COM. BNETRADIO.COM AND THE REST…. TO MR. RICARDO HERNANDEZ FOR MAKING TEJANO STILL HAPPEN IN DALLAS……TO FRANK T. FROM THE NEW WEST FOR BRINGING THE TEJANO ACTS WITH HIS CONCERTS TO DALLAS…..AND TO THE REST OF OUR LOCAL BANDS REY REYNA, LOS TEQUILA BOYS, CONJUMTO PRESTIGIO, PRESSION,CREACION THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR LOCALS MAKING NOISE AND NOT GETTING A CHANCE….WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON….ALSO TO MY FRIEND MARKY LEE HACHE 3 WHO WHO WAS A MEMBER OF THE HOMETOWN BOYS WHO IS ALSO STRUGGLING BUT BEING PATIENT…..TO MY FRIENDS STAMPEDE WHO ARE TRAVELING ALOT PAYING OUT OG THEIR POCKET TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN….RAZA THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION TO SEE WHO IS THE BEST BAND IN THE MARKET….. LIKE KXTN IN SAN ANTONIO SAY TEJANO AND PROUD !!!!! WE ARE A FAMILIA KEEPING OUR HERITAGE ALIVE IN OUR OWN UNIQUE WAY…. I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH MORE CLEAR I CAN EXPRESS MY OPINION…..PERO YA ES TIEMPO TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN FOR EVERYONE….THANK YOU FOR ANY FEEDBACK OR RESPONSE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME AT DJCASPER73[at]YAHOO.COM. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!!!!! Y QUE VIVA LA MUSICA TEJANA !!!!!

I would like to say, living here in south Texas all of my life I have hear Tejano music due to of course the Hispanic population. What I don’t understand is why they don’t they play Linda Escobar music. Staring with her father Eligio Escobar, he gave all of his life to singing and play conjunto music. He was one of those that didn’t really go with the new generation of new instruments; he kept it very traditional with guitars, drums, and accordian. The same goes with his daughter, Linda Escobar, she has given all her life into trying to keep this music going and that hoping it will never die. She too using very tradition conjunto style and we all should really appreciate her for doing that. I listen to the Spanish stations here in Corpus Christi and I never hear them play Linda Escobar or her dad, Eligio Escobar; I don’t understand. The only station I hear them play those two is KROB in Alice, Texas. I guess since Linda and her dad were from there. I just hope that the Hispanic population enjoy and support all the conjunto bands and support them; especially Linda Escobar, she gives her all to this music!!! God Bless You, Diana W.

My thoughts are that the tejano music that the majority of the fans like isn’t with the younger groups that are pulling away from actual tejano style music. The younger groups may be “pushing the envelope” so to speak with going a different direction with their style. A lot of new groups seem to being going towards the “norteno” side or seem to love focusing on playing a lot of cumbia’s instead of polkas and rancheras. I think that is where the industry has taken a big turn over that last couple of years or so. It is crazy that certain groups can only be heard on the net but my opinion is that for those who enjoy the David Lee Garza’s, Ram, Jay, Los Desperadoz, Ruben Ramos, etc styles of music won’t be and aren’t too interested in the direction that some of this music is heading towards. Myself included. They may be groups from Texas but good Tejano music it’s not!!!

Totally agree with u on giving these new artists more airplay. I personally have to go to the internet stations 2 hear some of these new artists. I would luv 2 hear more Veronica y Avance, Robbie y La Mirada, Megan Leyva, Lumbre, etc. on the radio. But seems that I have to go 2 the internet to hear them.
