This year’s Diez y Seis de Septiembre events will mix a combination of art, culture, music and of course, Mexican food, to showcase the Latino culture in celebration of Mexico’s Independence from Spain.

Diez y Seis marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which lasts through Oct. 15. Opening the month will be of a student art showcase at the University of Houston – Victoria on Sept. 16 with Hispanic culture as the theme.

“We want for them to learn a little bit more about Hispanic heritage and the importance of doing things for a cause and to be creative in art and appreciate art,” said Josie Rivera, with the Letting Education Achieve Dreams office at the UHV. “That’s a way they can learn about their heritage through art.”

The event is the culmination of a scholarship contest started in the spring. First, second and third place winners each receive scholarships to UHV or VC in the amounts of $500, $1,00 and full tuition cost. Second and third place winners will be announced at the reception.

In Goliad, the General Zaragoza Society will celebrate the holiday that weekend Sept. 19 with a menudo cookoff, golf tournament and live music. All proceeds will go toward scholarship money for aspiring Goliad college students.

“The annual 16th event has been a long standing tradition with the organization as one of our major fundraisers,” said Sherry Garcia, event organizer. “As well as celebrating and promoting our history and our culture, we also raise money for our local youth.”

The event will feature free menudo judging, Tejano music, folkloric dances and rides.

“We’re celebrating Mexico’s independence from Spain which is how we eventually ended up going into statehood,” Garcia said. “It’s a good time to celebrate with your friends.”
